The Refugee Advocacy Network has a group dedicated to advocacy related to the Charlotte Immigration Court.  Specifically, they want to increase local representation for asylees.

At the November 17th meeting the following strategies were decided upon:

  1. We need to increase the number of lawyers willing to represent asylees – Strategy 1
  2. We need to help develop stronger trust between asylee seekers and lawyers – Strategy 2

Two tactics were discussed to facilitate these strategies:

  1. Dr. Sarah Griffith is going to talk to Carolina Refugee Resettlement Agency to discuss ways we can build this trust.  At issue is the fact that asylee seekers come from countries where lawyers are part of the system that they are fleeing.
  2. We need to contact Federico at Communities in Schools to develop ways that students can assist their parents in developing this trust with lawyers who want to represent them.
